Combining two of the most beloved toy properties of the 1980's, G.I. Joe vs the Transformers presents a hypothetical "What-If" story. Readers of the GI Joe/Transformers crossover published by Marvel will remember that the Transformers had already been awakened, and met the forces of Cobra and the Joes several years later. Writer Josh Blaylock makes a radical departure from this storyline by instead having Cobra activate and reprogram these mechanical beings to suit their own agenda.

This of course leads to some fairly innovative changes in transformation modes for both Autobot and Decepticon alike, as both factions are enlisted as traditional Joe and Cobra vehicles. While the characters are familiar enough for any Joe or Transformer reader to follow, noticeable changes in histories are reminiscent of the "Ultimization" of the Marvel Universe for a new generation.
